It is law within the UK that every item of precious metal sold such as Platinum, Gold, Silver is stamped labelling the item with the type of metal it is. Platinum pieces which weigh less than 0.5 grams, 18ct Gold and Palladium pieces weighing less than 1.0 gram and Silver pieces weighing less than 7.78 grams are except from hallmark.
At Diamonds Factory all our products are hallmarked as per UK hallmarking law from London Assay Office (The GoldSmith Company)
The Goldsmiths' Company Assay Office is the oldest assay office in the United Kingdom. It has provided hallmarking services since The Goldsmiths' Company was founded in the 1300s. The company received its royal charter in 1327 and ranks 5th in order of precedence of the 12 Great Livery Companies of the City of London.
Hallmarking dates back to the 1300s when Edward I of England passed a law requiring any item made of silver, which was offered for sale, to be at least of equal quality as that of the coin of the realm (silver currency). The wardens of The Goldsmiths' Company were tasked with visiting workshops in the City of London to assay (test) silver articles. If these articles were found to be below standard they were originally destroyed and the metal forfeited to the King. If they passed, each article received the King's mark of authentication - the mark of a leopard's head. By 1478, there were several hundred workshops and merchants manufacturing silver articles in the City of London. It was not possible for the wardens to visit them all so the merchants were ordered to bring their items to Goldsmiths' Hall for testing and marking and a permanent Assay Office was established in the building. This is the origin of the term hallmark - struck with the King's mark at Goldsmiths' Hall.
In 1544 the Goldsmith's Company adopted the King's mark as their town mark and the mark of the leopard's head is now internationally recognised as the mark of this assay office.
The Goldsmiths's Company Assay Office is still based at Goldsmiths's Hall and remains the oldest company in Britain to be continually trading from the same site. However, it also has two satellite offices; at Greville Street in Hatton Garden in the heart of the London jewellery quarter and within a high security complex near London's Heathrow airport. It now has a new off-site facility within the Dalston-based jewellery manufacturer, Allied Gold. This is the first time in the Assay Office's 700 year history that it has opened permanent hallmarking services on a customer's premises.
In addition to hallmarking, the office has now expanded its range of services to support the jewellery trade and enforcement authorities. It offers a variety of specialist analytical services including nickel, lead & cadmium testing, antique silver dating, non-destructive compositional analysis, plating thickness measurement and a melt and assay service for scrap precious metal carried out in their fully independent on-site laboratory. Other services offered are a jewellery valuation service, laser marking, trading standards assistance, high quality photography and a comprehensive range of training and educational seminars, lectures and specialist events.
With their brilliant fire and irresistible sparkle, the magnificent beauty radiating off the surface of a perfectly cut diamond is hard to surpass — making this precious stone one of the most prized and sought-after choices for celebrating life’s major milestones.
Although natural diamonds mined from the earth have been traditionally used to craft jewellery, lab-grown diamonds are gaining rapid popularity and, despite the scepticism surrounding their origins, are fundamentally no different than earth-mined diamonds.
Lab-grown diamonds, as the name suggests, are born in the confines of a lab but possess the same chemical composition, physical properties and value as their earth-mined counterparts. As a result, lab-grown diamonds can be as classified as real diamonds.
Comparing natural diamonds with lab-grown diamonds
Sometimes, lab-grown diamonds are erroneously labelled as fake diamonds. However, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) categorises a diamond as pure crystallised carbon in the isometric cubic system, regardless of its origins — thereby giving lab-grown diamonds the status of real diamonds.
Only an expert gemologist using the right equipment can tell the two apart when it comes down to physically distinguishing between lab-grown and natural diamonds. Superficial observations and traditional diamond detectors are unable to differentiate between the two.
Manufacturing process
Lab-grown diamonds are grown in labs from tiny carbon seeds that are sourced from other diamonds — using advanced techniques and technology that simulate the exact conditions under which natural diamonds form in the earth’s crust. The seed is placed in a vacuum where carbon molecules start layering themselves onto the seed until it reaches the required size, after which it can be cut and polished like a natural diamond.
While it takes billions of years to form earth-mined diamonds, lab-grown diamonds take approximately six to eight weeks to grow — it takes around two weeks to grow a one-carat diamond in a lab.
Price
Natural diamonds wield a hefty price tag owing to their rarity and the complex extraction process involving expensive mining operations. Unlike lab-grown diamonds, which are created in strictly controlled environments, earth-mined diamonds are fashioned naturally under the ancient alchemy of heat and pressure and pushed into the earth’s surface through volcanic eruptions — these variable conditions impart characteristics that make each stone unique.
Compared to natural diamonds, the price of lab-grown diamonds is significantly lower due to the elimination of the labour process.
Sustainability
When purchasing a lab-grown diamond, it is important to validate the authenticity of its sustainability. Although many lab-grown diamonds are marketed as being eco-friendly, it is essential to ensure that the jewellers are trustworthy and reputable.
Our sparkling lab-grown diamonds are free from mining, making them a sustainable and ethical choice that’s just as beautiful as natural diamonds. Our lab-grown diamonds are also good for the environment, which makes them ideal for those who care about reducing their carbon footprint.
As beautiful as they are, the magnificent legacy of real diamonds has been tainted by unethical practices so it is important to buy diamond jewellery from trusted organisations like ours. We believe there is a need for greater accountability and transparency in the diamond industry, which is why we ensure that all our real diamonds are ethically sourced.
Cubic zirconia vs. diamonds — learn the difference
Diamond simulants, such as cubic zirconia and moissanite, resemble diamonds but are not true carbon crystals — they can be classified as fake diamonds. When comparing cubic zirconia and diamonds, it’s fairly easy to see why they are sold at a lower price than lab-grown diamonds. Simulants lack the scintillation and brilliant fire that makes real diamonds special.
Cubic zirconia is optically very different from real diamonds. For instance, natural and lab-created diamonds have thermal conductivity, which differs from diamond simulants. Additionally, the refractive properties of diamond simulants are not as magnificent as those offered by natural and lab-grown diamond alternatives.
When simulants and real diamonds are held under natural light, they radiate an intense white luminescent fire. In contrast, synthetically crafted simulants like cubic zirconia give off coloured sparkles creating a rainbow-like effect. Cubic zirconia has a higher dispersion rate and a lower refractive index than diamonds. Cubic zirconia is often chosen by those who want to emulate the look and feel of real diamonds without the hefty price tag.
